Heathrow Airport Terminal 5Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport opened in March 2008 for phase 1 of the project. This will allow the airport to carry an additional 27 million passengers a year increasing to 30 million the following year when phase 2 is completed.  This will make Heathrow the worlds busiest airport carrying a total of 90 million passengers.  As a result of the opening of the terminal an extra 16,500 jobs will be created giving a total of 84,500.   The airport will be split between short and long haul flights

Once completed the new five storied terminalwill be big enough to fit 50 football pitches and will host an extra 150 shops and 25 restaurants, including the a designer Prada store and Tiffany boutique.  A new railway system has been created and will be situated in the basement of Concourse A with the platforms for the Piccadilly line Tube and Heathrow Express.  Further platforms have been created for future expansion.

The terminal been developed with state of the art transportation systems within the airport. Instead of the usual conveyor belts to guide passengers around the terminals, driverless pods will carry travelers to various points within the terminal.  The pods known as automated people mover(APM) are run by computer system along guideways so do not need any staff.

After  initial operational difficulties  when the Heathrow's new  Terminal 5 building opened the terminal is now working normally. Remaining flights that were due to move to Terminal 5 will now be moved in phased stages with the 1st phase taking place on the 5th June and a further two stages, one on the 17th September and the last one at the end of October.  The decision to implement the changes in phased stages was to make sure that no disruption occurs during the summer period, Heathrow airports busiest time.
